UNIUD MALTO-LAB

The university malting plant

The university malting facility has a production capacity of 400 kg of malt per processing cycle. The steeping and drying phases are carried out in a truncated conical tank. The plant is equipped with sensors that enable automated process control via a PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) system. The process continues with the transfer of the grain mass into the germination drum. In the final stage, the grains are dried under controlled conditions to preserve enzymatic activity, thereby ensuring optimal storage and transport characteristics of the malt. Germination and kilning parameters are configured and managed through the PLC system.

The facility is equipped with the following ancillary equipment:

  • Destoner

  • Calibrator

  • Conveyor belt (for barley/malt loading and unloading)

  • Rootlet brush

These systems is an essential components for research and educational activities, but also they represent valuable tools available to all stakeholders interested in the production of malt from two-row barley and wheat.
