Udine, Sant'Osvaldo

Presentazione

The land located in Udine has a surface area of approximately 35 hectares and it was purchased by the Province of Udine in 1983. In the past, it was part of the agricultural farm of the Psychiatric Hospital.

Initially, the farm management was entrusted to the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Udine, which collaborated with the Regional Center for Agricultural Experimentation (now ERSA). Later, the Faculty of Agriculture directly took over management, particularly through the past Institute of Plant Production. For several years, the estate operated with external service companies, temporary staff, and rented equipment, while awaiting permanent staff recruitment and the purchase of its own equipment.

Despite these efforts, institutional activities were slow to start due to the lack of adequate infrastructure. Only in 1988, with the first financial allocations, it was possible to begin the renovation work and conduct pedological and climatic studies. Essential structures for agricultural experimentation, such as lysimeters, greenhouses, orchards, and vineyards, were built with joint financial support from the estate and research groups within the Faculty of Agriculture.

In 1989, the renovation of the main building was completed. Such building still houses the administration and management offices as well as some laboratories. From 1990, the constructions of roads and irrigation systems began, while in 1992, the agricultural center was inaugurated. This center includes buildings for storing agricultural equipment, warehouses, technical staff facilities, and conference rooms for educational activities and technical meetings. Finally, in 1995, the first annex of buildings connected to the administrative offices was completed.
