Bank of Indigenous Plant Germplasm

The Agricultural Company "Antonio Servadei" hosts the Native Plant Germplasm Bank (BaGaV), located in Udine, San Osvaldo.

It was established by Regional Law No. 11 of April 22, 2002, and entrusted to the University of Udine.

The main objectives of BaGaV, as stated in Article 1 (Purpose) of the founding law, are "the protection of native genetic resources of agricultural and forestry interest, including wild plants related to cultivated species, concerning species, breeds, varieties, populations, cultivars, ecotypes, and clones for which there are economic, scientific, environmental, and cultural interests and that are threatened by genetic erosion. [...] Also subjected to protection under this law there are species, breeds, and varieties currently extinct in the region but preserved in botanical gardens, breeding centers, experimental institutes, public or private gene banks, reference fields, or research centers in other regions or countries, for which there is an interest in promoting reintroduction."
